What is sympathetic hyperactivity ?
The nervous system of our body is of two types, Somatic and Autonomous. The somatic nervous system has "motor" and "sensory" types which as the names suggest look after your concious movements and sensations of the body respetively. The autonomic nervous system however is the unsung hero of the body. It works in the background controlling all the essential systems of the body participating in fine tuning blood pressure, respiratory rate, acid secretion of the stomach, level of insulin from the pancreas as well as digestive juices and so on. It is a part of the control of your urinary functions (making less of more dilute urine) and also help the regular bowel movements. If you gag over a piece of meat, it is your autonomic system that makes you cough and your eyes water. If you hear bad news or like a dashing young man (or woman), it is this sytem that makes you want to rush to the loo or make you weak in the knee, respectively (and appropriately, we hope). If this system gets over active by a punch in the solar plexus or the kidneys or the testes, it can cause instant death by cardiac arrest.
